Real Madrid has fined midfielders Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni €500,000 each for their involvement in a physical altercation, the club announced on Wednesday.
The disciplinary proceedings were launched after the two players clashed in training on Thursday, leaving Valverde with an injury that is expected to sideline him for 10 to 14 days.
“Real Madrid CF informs that, in relation to the events that led to the initiation of disciplinary proceedings yesterday against our players Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni, both appeared today before the investigating officer in charge of the case,” the club said in a statement.
“During the questioning, the players expressed deep regret over the incident and apologized to one another. They also apologized to the club, their teammates, the coaching staff, and the fans. Both stated they are ready to accept any punishment the club deems appropriate.”
“As a result, Real Madrid has decided to impose a fine of €500,000 on each player, thereby concluding the internal procedures,” the statement added.
Real Madrid currently sits second in La Liga with 77 points, 11 behind Barcelona. The two teams are set to face off in the 35th round on Sunday in a crucial away match for Los Blancos.
